From Pedals to Pages: Riding for Change

As I wrap up my book, I find myself reflecting on the intricate journey that has brought me to this point. It started as an idea to bike cross-country while addressing the lack of diversity in real estate and related fields. However, it has evolved into a deeper exploration of the systemic and institutional barriers that many entrepreneurs often encounter.

My adventure began in 2019, with each pedal stroke covering miles, while uncovering layers of challenges and insights that I hadn’t anticipated. The ride arose from necessity—a tangible act to dig into and highlight the depths of the systemic issues in our industries and communities.

A Shift in Perspective

In the years following my ride, my role within an economic development corporation provided me with a unique vantage point. I was tasked with developing programs aimed at assisting individuals with moderate and low incomes to launch their businesses. I embarked on a study involving ten businesses and ten entrepreneur support organizations. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of these organizations in fostering the growth and success of minority-owned businesses.

The findings were eye-opening. Despite good intentions, organizations failed to bridge the gap between aspiration and actualization for these entrepreneurs. This insight echoed my own entrepreneurial struggles and later, my role in providing support.

From Rides to Writings

Experiencing both the need for help and the opportunity to offer support has enriched my book. More than just a bike ride, it delves into the complex challenges faced by entrepreneurs, particularly from marginalized communities. The book explores the multifaceted nature of these barriers and aims to provide a deeper understanding of them.

My journey, both physical and metaphorical has revealed the harsh realities of systemic obstacles. These are not only barriers to a cyclist’s path but also represent the challenges faced by many in navigating the entrepreneurial landscape. The book explores these issues, drawing parallels between the literal cross-country journey and the figurative journey of overcoming systemic challenges.

Looking Ahead

As I finalize the pages of this book, I’m filled with a sense of anticipation and hope. My initial goal to ride across the country has evolved into a mission to confront the systemic barriers that shape our experiences.

This book explores the resilience needed for both physical journeys on the open road and the challenges of entrepreneurship. It weaves personal stories with socioeconomic analysis, giving a comprehensive view of the obstacles and possibilities on our journey towards inclusivity and diversity.

I invite you to join me in this ongoing exploration, as we pedal through pages and pave new paths towards understanding and change.

Stay tuned for updates, and thank you for joining me on this journey!
